School of Human Ecology: A Worthy Physical Environment
The School of Human Ecology (SoHE), which consistently ranks in the top five of institutions with similar programs, has an established record of excellence based on an interdisciplinary approach to teaching, research and outreach. Throughout its 100 year history, the School has provided leadership in areas that directly affect children, families, individuals and groups within their increasingly complex social, psychological, economic, designed and cultural environments.
Taliesin Architects developed a plan to create a worthy physical environment for the School of Human Ecology. The new facilities will accommodate all functions of the School within a single building, meet the requirements for media-rich teaching and research space, upgrade space for student activities, and provide a gathering area for public events.
Components of the proposed facility include:
-- Integrated teaching and research spaces to create a unified learning community.
-- A central atrium/public gathering space around a new ground level main entrance.
-- Modern preschool facilities, doubling the capacity for children age 6 weeks to 5 years with media-rich teaching and research capabilities.
-- Expanded facilities for the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection, home to over 12,000 textiles and costumes making it one of the largest university textile collections in the United States.
-- A climate-controlled Gallery of Design to facilitate partnerships with other museums/artists and enhance exhibitions.
